David Motion was born in Edinburgh in 1959. He studied at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art
in Dundee, from 1978-1982, winning the Drawing Prize, and being awarded DA in Drawing and Painting. Exhibitions followed in Dundee Repertory Theatre Gallery, Art College Gallery, and Dunkeld Gallery. David exhibited etchings with the Dundee Printmakers Workshop from 1982-1987. David was a member of the Dundee Group. In 1985 David was offered a post with Dundee University Botanical Gardens, creating plant and flower illustrations and large oil paintings. This furthered his interest in flowers in a landscape, notable in his earliest art works, and in his art college sketchbooks.
After doing the PGCE S course at Dundee College of Education. David moved to Lewis in the Outer Hebrides as an art teacher for four years and spent his spare time painting and drawing the landscapes and seascapes, and the Neolithic monuments at Callanish. The next two years were
spent on Barra teaching Art.

Then onto a North London school for four years as Head of Art. Followed by four years as Head of
Art at Claremont Fan Court School in Esher. The last 17 years of teaching were in Somerset and Bristol.
David has exhibited with the Morven Gallery on Lewis and the Thackeray Gallery, Kensington, London. There are art works in the public collections of Lothian Region, Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and the Western Isles Islands Council. There are works in private collections In
Scotland, Holland, USA, Somerset and London. In one London private collection a painting by
David hangs between a Cezanne and a Soutine painting.
