Andrzej Maląg: Visualizing Light, Physics, and Imagination
Born in 1950 and raised in the port city of Szczecin, Poland, Andrzej Maląg’s artistic sensibility was shaped early by the unique atmosphere of a maritime landscape. The shipyards, the rhythm of industrial harbor life, and the proximity—and exoticism—of the sea left a lasting imprint on his imagination. These surroundings guided his initial interests toward naval architecture and shipbuilding, while simultaneously nurturing a deep attraction to art and painting, predominantly inspired by maritime themes.
Early Artistic Formation
Maląg’s formal artistic education began at a remarkably young age. From 1956 to 1968, he participated in the Art Studio of the Youth House of Culture in Szczecin. Under the guidance of outstanding artist-instructors, his visual language expanded beyond the marine world to include a fascination with ancient history and early civilizations—interests that would later resurface in more symbolic and conceptual forms.
Despite this strong artistic foundation, Maląg’s life took a parallel and demanding technical direction. While painting never disappeared from his life, it often had to yield time to his growing scientific career.

A Distinguished Scientific Career
Maląg pursued higher education at the Faculty of Electronics at Gdańsk University of Technology, completing his studies in 1974. His scientific path continued with a PhD in 1983 and a Doctor of Science degree in 2004 at the Institute of Electron Technology in Warsaw, specializing in semiconductor optoelectronics.
His professional work focused on the design, construction, and technology of semiconductor lasers. Over the years, he served as a researcher and later as Head of the Department of Optoelectronics at the Institute of Electronic Materials Technology. His contributions include over 100 scientific publications and patents, published both nationally and internationally. He concluded his scientific career in 2019, leaving behind a significant legacy in applied physics and optoelectronic research.
Returning Fully to Art
With the conclusion of his scientific work, 2019 marked a decisive turning point. Maląg returned fully to artistic creation, this time enriched by decades of experience in optics, physics, and advanced technology. Painting once again became his primary form of expression.
While marine themes remain close to his heart, his artistic scope has broadened significantly. His works now explore physical phenomena such as wave motion, quantum effects, and cosmological questions. Literary influences—particularly science fiction and fantasy—intersect with a growing fascination for Mediterranean cultures. These diverse inspirations converge into paintings that balance intuition with structure, imagination with scientific awareness.
Interference Photo-Graphics: A Unique Visual Language
Another significant dimension of Maląg’s work is digital graphics, particularly a process he developed known as interference photo-graphics. Inspired by an early observation of light interference caused by raindrops on glass in Szczecin, Maląg replaced randomness with precision.
He designs sub-millimeter-scale masks through which a laser beam passes. At the edges of these masks, the light is diffracted, and the overlapping deflected beams create complex interference patterns on a distant screen or CCD matrix. The resulting images depend on numerous parameters—especially the shape and size of the mask—and serve as the foundation for further digital processing and artistic composition.
The outcome is a body of work that sits at the intersection of physics and visual poetry, transforming scientific phenomena into immersive, abstract imagery.
Exhibitions and Recognition
Andrzej Maląg has exhibited both his paintings and interference photo-graphics in numerous exhibitions across Poland, including in Warsaw, Sanok, and Biłgoraj. His works are represented by galleries such as Art-of-Poland and Soa Hub in Warsaw, as well as Gallery 5-Dimension in Kraków.
Internationally, his art is accessible through online platforms including Teravarna, ArtMajeur, and the online art magazine ARTERY, where his work has been featured in dedicated spotlights.

Art, Architecture, and Collaboration
Beyond his individual practice, Maląg collaborates with the MAAG company, led by his wife and artistic advisor Anna Maląg—an architect and interior designer. Their joint work focuses on interior and façade color design. A notable achievement of this collaboration was awarded in Modena, Italy, where they received First Prize in the Designing for Everlasting Beauty – ARIOSTEA MARMI 2000 Competition for ceramic tile floor compositions designed for the halls of the Ożarów Cable Factory.
A Life of Synthesis
Today, artistic creation is Andrzej Maląg’s most engaging and central pursuit. His work stands as a rare synthesis of lifelong observation, scientific rigor, and artistic sensitivity—where light becomes matter, physics becomes metaphor, and the sea remains an ever-present horizon.
