I have always worked steadily as an artist/poet while also pursuing other intellectual and diverse life pursuits. My art began with my ability to notice ironies of culture and resulting philosophical inconsistencies in American consumerism/capitalism. As a result my early work often focused on advertising images, which I dubbed “ambivalent gestures” (is this person experiencing pain or pleasure?) I am still peeling away layers of these ironies by looking at the dichotomies of body/mind as symbolized by folklore, anti-heroes of the American west, fairy tales— a favorite of Carl Jung as a way of representing the psyche.
At the age of <10 I was recognized as having artistic talent, at the age of 14 I became a surfer in California, at the age of 19 I graduated from Drew University in New Jersey, majoring in fine art, at the age of 25 I became a father, at the age of 31 I divorced and became a single parent, at the age of 35 I remarried and became a step-father, at the age of 36 I became a carpenter, at the age of 45 I became a meditator, at the age of 53 I moved to Virginia, at the age of 58 I temporarily retired carpentry to become a full time artist, at the age of 63 I juried into McGuffey Art Center in Charlottesville VA as a painter and rented a studio with my wife, at age of 64 joined executive council at McGuffey, at the age of 65 I became a grandfather and full time nanny, at age 67 I moved to a farm in Kents Store VA and became passionate about gardening, at 69 I resumed work as artist, now exclusively in colored pencil, and resumed work as a self-employed carpenter. I have my own business as a finish carpenter/craftsman. At every age I have delved into spirituality and consciousness research, mysticism, mathematics, physics, alternative modalities of healing and psychology. I write poetry. I do yoga. I am an enthusiastic (compulsive) reader.
