Vendor Biography
Born (1950) and grew up in Szczecin, Poland. The atmosphere of the city-port, shipyard, proximity and exoticism of the sea directed his interests to naval architecture and shipbuilding. Simultaneous interests in art and painting were also focused mainly on maritime affairs.
His education in art is participation in the Art Studio of Youth House of Culture, Szczecin during 1956 – 1968. Thanks to outstanding instructors-artists, the current interests were expanded to include a fascination with ancient history and cultures.
Parallel technical education in Szczecin and later mainly influenced his life path, however. But he never definitely suspended painting, although he couldn’t devote it as much time as he would like.
Studies at the Faculty of Electronics, Gdansk University of Technology completed in 1974, followed by PhD (1983) and DSc (2004) at the Institute of Electron Technology in Warsaw in the field of semiconductor optoelectronics. Professional interests in the design, construction and technology of semiconductor lasers pursued at ITE and then as a researcher, then as the head of the Department of Optoelectronics at the Institute of Electronic Materials Technology. Authorship and co-authorship of more than 100 publications and patents in national and international publications. Completion of scientific activities as of 2019.
In 2019 he activated his previous interests in artistic creation, in connection with his experience in optical techniques. In painting, marine themes are still close, although, as the years passed, other interests added to it: attempts to illustrate physical phenomena, e.g. wave motion, quantum effects, cosmological issues, influence of literature (s-f and fantasy), fascination with Mediterranean cultures… Now it’s the most engaging activity for him.
Another field of interest is digital graphics. In order to obtain interference effects, instead of raindrops on glasses (the effect originally noticed yet in Szczecin), sub-millimeter-sized masks had been designed. The laser beam passing through them is partially deflected at the edges (diffraction), and the deflected component beams overlapping each other create interference images on the distant screen (like a CCD matrix), depending on several parameters, especially on the designed shape and size of the mask. The registered interference images are the basis for further graphic processing and composition. This has been named ‘interference photo-graphics’.
Andrzej Malag has had several exhibitions of interference photo-graphics and painting around Poland, including Warsaw, Sanok, Bilgoraj. His works are presented in several art galleries, such as ‘Art-of-Poland’ and ‘Soa Hub’ in Warsaw, ‘Gallery 5-Dimension’ in Krakow. He is also present in art galleries online: ‘Teravarna’ https://www.teravarna.com/artists/andrzej-malag, ‘ArtMajeur’ https://www.artmajeur.com/andrzej-malag, and in ‘ARTERY’ online art magazine https://arterynyc.com/artery-spotlight-andrzej-mlag/.
He cooperates with the ‘MAAG’ company led by his wife and advisor Anna Malag (architect and interior designer) in the field of interior and facade colors https://maag.biz.pl/o-nas/. Of results: Modena Italy – 1st prize in the ‘Designing for Everlasting Beauty ARIOSTEA MARMI 2000 Competition’ – for ceramic tile floor compositions in halls of Ożarów Cable Factory.
