Robert (Bob) Peckham was born and raised in Yorkshire and spent most of his younger years in the Yorkshire Dales. He did a first degree in Physics at Imperial College, London, followed by doctoral and postdoc research at Jodrell Bank Radio Astronomy Laboratories, Manchester University. Most of his later working life was spent as a scientist at the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre, at Ispra, Northern Italy.
While living in Yorkshire he was naturally introduced to hill walking, caving and rock climbing. The move to Italy enabled him to develop his growing interest in Alpine mountaineering and ski touring. In Italy he also met Marjory who was teaching at the European School, and there they married and had two children. His work for the European Commission enabled him to visit many of the major cities of Europe, and from time to time to explore the important Art Galleries where he discovered the Impressionists and the Old Masters which inspired him to try his hand at painting.
On mountaineering and skiing trips to the Engadine in Switzerland he came across the works of Giovanni Segantini and Robert Berry, who both worked there in the late 1800s, and these have provided a strong source of inspiration and motivation.
