Description

‘The Grand Gala’ represents my first work realised following my distinctive stylistic style, characterised by the exclusive use of the spatula, a technique that critics have defined as a fusion of impressionism and expressionism.This pictorial work depicts a sumptuous gala evening, populated by a multitude of guests engaged in entertaining themselves or showing off their social habits and characteristics. However, behind the apparent elegance and opulence, there are hidden details that denounce the hypocrisies, abuses of power and corrupt behaviour of an increasingly greedy and unscrupulous bourgeoisie. Among the most significant symbolic elements are nuns intent on taking offerings from the dishes they present, a man in a suit leaning over a tray while consuming drugs, and even the hands of a corpse emerging from under two tables at the sides of the room.

These details serve to reveal the contradictions and dark sides of society, hidden behind a façade of respectability.The gala hall is lit by a large 19th-century chandelier, the only source of light, which casts a warm glow on the walls adorned with curtains and flags. The latter mix symbols of the past and present: from the flag of the Crusades to that of the Native American tribe, from the peace flag to that of Formula 1, from the pirate flag to the Nazi flag, the latter cleverly camouflaged with the tones of the curtains to be less noticeable. Each flag, laden with symbolic meanings, contributes to an overall critique of society, underlining the eternal repetition of conflicts and injustices. ‘The Grand Gala’ is thus not only a visual representation, but an invitation to reflect on universal themes, through a layered narrative rich in meaning.
