Annella Cowan: Capturing Rhythm in the Scottish Landscape
The changing light, color, and textures of the Scottish landscape provide a constant source of inspiration
Annella Cowan is a Scottish artist whose work draws deep inspiration from the landscapes, seasons, and shifting weather of the region where she lives. Before fully dedicating herself to painting, Cowan built a distinguished legal career. She graduated from University of Edinburgh with an LL.B (Hons) in 1976 and later earned a Master of Science degree in 1984. She practiced law from 1978 to 1993 before serving as a Sheriff—a judge in the Scottish courts—until her retirement in 2016.
After years in the legal profession, Cowan turned her focus toward art, developing a practice that has been exhibited throughout North East Scotland and collected internationally, including in the United States. Her paintings reflect a strong connection to the natural environment around her.

Cowan’s landscapes often take the form of large-scale compositions that allow her to work expansively with paint. She explores the rhythm of the land through movement, bold color, and layered textures, letting the flow of paint across the surface create depth and energy. The result is vibrant and expressive imagery that conveys not just the appearance of a place, but the atmosphere and emotion of experiencing it.
Alongside her landscapes, Cowan also creates still life works. In these pieces she maintains the same expressive approach while focusing more closely on form and detail. Through strong brushwork, rich color, and careful attention to texture, she invites viewers to explore the subtle beauty of everyday objects.
At the core of Cowan’s artistic philosophy lies a simple belief: art should bring joy and enrich life. Through her dynamic compositions and celebration of the natural world, her work aims to offer viewers a sense of vitality, movement, and connection to the environment that surrounds us.
