Planetary Platter: Sun Spot

This is a large, hand-thrown, high-fired porcelain platter with a blue crystalline glaze. It is 21 inches in diameter and 3 inches deep and comes with a hand-made, heavy-duty plate hanger so it is ready to hang on a wall.

Crystalline glazes are unique and notoriously difficult to perfect. The crystals form in the same way as ice crystals, but instead of forming at freezing temperatures, they form at 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Each crystal starts at a central point and grows from there. The longer the kiln is held at 2,000 degrees, the bigger the crystal. Variations in temperature and location in the kiln help create differently shaped crystals.
