Max McCance was raised and educated in Glasgow. In 1981 he moved to Italy, to study sculpture and design, eventually setting up a successful furniture and sculpture studio in Tuscany. He then travelled and worked in the USA, returning to Scotland in 1989 to establish his present workshop.His work can be viewed there year-round.
Max McCance transforms timber into objects that look familiar and yet feel disarming and otherworldly. His practice — which he calls “technorganic design” –draws on the natural world, with inspiration ranging from the galactic scale to the microscopic.
His work blends classical craft with bold experiment.Each piece is carefully hand-made, often requiring the invention of new construction techniques.
