Atina is a village in the Frosinone region in Italy. The village is built on the remains of an former Roman settlement. This painting represents the linearity of the village from the bottom of the hill to the top. The colours are inspired by the sun kissed walls of the village. The connecting lines are inspired by the following quote from Italo Calvino’s Invisible Cities, “The city, however, does not tell its past, but contains it like the lines of a hand, written in the corners of the streets, the gratings of the windows, the banisters of the steps, the antennae of the lightning rods, the poles of the flags, every segment marked in turn with scratches, indentations, scrolls.” The strong line on the side of the painting is the one unified dark sewage pipe that appears on the outside of every building, just as in distant memory of being a child growing up in the 60s in Bombay.
