Description

‘The Port’ is an oil on canvas work I created upon returning from my trip to Tarifa, the southernmost point of Spain, located a short distance from Morocco. The work depicts the view of the port, faithfully reproducing some of its most emblematic features: the large red lighthouse that, on clear nights, illuminated the surrounding area; the restaurants overlooking the sea, teeming with life; and, in the background, the suggestive castle of Arab origin, silent witness of a thousand-year history. There is no lack of more intimate details, such as the small fishermen’s boats, placidly moored.

The entire composition is permeated by a strongly distorted and curved vision, an effect that gives the landscape a sense of enveloping depth, evoking the welcoming and dynamic nature that characterises each port. This perspective play almost seems to surround two figures in the background, engaged in a dance along the promenade leading to the lighthouse, adding an element of intimacy and movement to the scene.

The colouring and drafting of the colour give the work a dual nature: on the one hand, a feeling of calm, conveyed by the fluidity of the brushstrokes and the soft tones; on the other, a vibrant frenzy, which emerges through the colour contrasts and the dynamism of the composition. ‘The Port’ thus stands as a visual homage to the place, capable of capturing not only its physical beauty, but also its emotional energy.
