Alexandra Mezo Art : Glass, Memory, and Light

Alexandra Mezo is a glass artist from Hungary who now lives in Ireland. Her journey in art began with an early interest in creative crafts and evolved into a deep connection with glass. She finds inspiration in her childhood memories and nature, which remain central to her work.

Before discovering glass, Alexandra trained in fancy leather making at Simonyi Károly Technical School in Pécs from 2006 to 2010. This early technical education laid a foundation for her tactile approach to art. Her exposure to diverse materials encouraged her to explore different creative techniques.

In 2011, Alexandra attended the Szimultán Art School in Budapest. She spent two and a half years there and fell in love with glass. This period marked the start of a new passion that would define her future artistic practice.

She furthered her studies at Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design in Budapest, graduating in 2017 with a focus on glass design. During her time there, she refined her glass blowing techniques and worked as a glass blowing assistant at the J&B Glass Studio Budapest from 2012 to 2016.

Alexandra’s work is marked by her interest in mixing glass with details from textiles. She draws on the knitted and crocheted designs created by her grandmother, which add a personal touch to each piece. This unique approach is brought to life through her use of the casting technique.

She does not use duplicate moulds. Instead, every work is carefully hand-finished by sanding and polishing. This process ensures that each piece is one of a kind, reflecting her commitment to individuality in art.

Alexandra is an active member of several glass societies. Since 2022, she has been part of the Hungarian Glass Art Society, joined The Contemporary Glass Society in 2021, and became a member of the Glass Society of Ireland the same year. These memberships keep her connected to a wider community of glass artists.

In her artist statement, Alexandra explains that glass is like a miracle in which she can immerse herself daily. Through her work, she aims to convey wonder by harnessing techniques that allow tiny details to interact with light. Today, she continues to sculpt and create glass necklaces in her own workshop, pushing the boundaries of her art with each new piece.
